Patrick Moran who resigned as chairman in December has decided, after many forceful requests and accolades from the committee and members of the group, to rescind his resignation and continue as chairman. This is indeed excellent news, Patrick has taken the group from strength to strength over the past 4 years of his chairmanship and this will now continue for the forseeable future.

looking forward to a great night!  The entertainment will be by TV Magician Alan Hudson. He has appeared in Las Vegas with Jonathan Ross on 'Fool Us with Penn & Teller' and he has also appeared on 'The Next Great Magician' during the last few weeks. He is a member of The Inner Magic Circle so he is very experienced and is credited with being very funny too. So all in all he should be an excellent entertainer

A great night was had by all. Nice venue, good food, superb entertainment and to cap it all Patricks jokes! Brilliant evening.

March - BHF fundraising

In March the BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION  were asking people to  de-chox for the month to raise money . Linda Barratt , Jane MacBryde and John Payne  from the Alex Cardiac rehab team ( pictured )  , and Vinnie Brennan , from the dementia team all joined in and ate absolutely no chocolate for 31 days.  We raised £478 for the BHF. We would like to thank  everybody that sponsored us and say we thoroughly enjoyed our cream eggs on 1st april !

April - speaker change

Wednesday 12th- bi monthly meeting, A Lipidologist (Dr Cramb) will be giving a talk on Cholesterol, it's management and the importance of keeping the numbers low.

Dr Cramb is a Lipidologist, director of pathology, consultant chemical pathologist and a former chair of Heart UK. There was a full house (80) for Dr Cramb's talk on Lipidology and the management of cholesterol in the body. Dr Cramb used a question and answer style for his interactive talk and there were plenty of questions forthcoming. Dr Cramb's knowledge and experience was amazing, he answered the questions in layman’s terms so that all of us could understand them. As you can imagine most of the questions related to Statins, their effectiveness, side effects, doses and types. He also talked about the effect of having the correct diet, lowering alcohol intake, the added values of exercise (although a few members were dismayed when he said that 4 x 30 mins walk a week were almost as effective at lowering cholesterol and gaining fitness levels as running marathons), the effect of Triglycerides (Triglycerides are a form of dietary fat found in meats, dairy produce and cooking oils. The liver also makes triglycerides.) on cholesterol use in the body. The talk was informative and well delivered by a Dr who obviously knows most of what there is to know about Lipids and Cholesterol management.

Patrick gave Dr Cramb a small gift as a token of thanks from all of us, the amount of applause Dr Cramb received was probably the most we have ever heard for a speaker.

Jane's Birthday

Jane's 40-10 birthday has appeared as if from nowhere...

The Friday morning exercise classes along with the Tuesday Tai Chi class clubbed together to buy her a birthday present. The presentation was most eloquently delivered by Roger and answered equally eloquently by Jane.

Friday 19th - Golf Day at Gaude Luce

June - Speaker change

Wednesday 14th - bi monthly meeting,  Linda Barratt will be giving updates on the Alex and the NHS along with any new drug developments.

More than 50 members attended Linda's talk. Patrick kicked off the evening with a few of his now 'infamous jokes' , a few were even funny.! :-)

Linda updated us on the all the new and exciting things that are taking place in the NHS and the Alex in particular. Coronary care and Cardic rehab are still going strong and look to be there for the long term.

Linda talked about the future of stem cell treatment and the possibility that they will be able to regenerate heart and lungs.

Linda answered our questions brilliantly and, as usual, at a level which we could all understand.

Linda passed out some very tasty ohso chocolate which was amazingly suger free.

Patrick presented Linda with a well earned gift to say thank you.

Friday 28th - Golf day at Cleobury

Wednesday 9th- bi monthly meeting,  quiz evening

This was a great event attended by 40 or so members. Patrick started off with his now infamous joke telling session. The questions, set by Patrick this year, were excellent and created a superb atmosphere with lots of laughing and joviality. Not quite sure who won but I think they went away happy with a bottle of wine each. Booby prize went to Frank and his wife, mind you he was in a team of two whilst the rest of us had 6 or more. There were lots of raffle prizes with many members, who had already won a prize, asking for it to be redrawn so as to spread the prizes around a little, this lead to much cheering and ribaldry. All in all a great night of fun.

Friday 15th - Golf day at Bromsgrove

The hale and hearties golfers have now finished their season . In  July we played at Cleobury Mortimer and got very very wet !  The winners that day were Frank Langley ,  Lord Peter Judd , Len Alcock and Jane MacBryde .  The nearest the pin winners with excellent tee shots were Val Mee and Frank Langley . Early in September at Bromsgrove , the weather was much kinder to us . The winning team that day  was  Dave Moreton , Pat Comer , Roger Lomas and Jane .  The nearest the pin was won by Ian Ballinger and Steve Geier  was welcomed to the club and reportedly thoroughly enjoyed the day .  We are very welcoming of new golfers  so please look out for the 2018 dates and contact Jane on  01527 503882  if you would like to play .  We don't take ourselves very seriously and have varying handicaps of all standards  so please join us if you wish .

Wednesday 11th- AGM and Cheese and Wine evening

An excellent evening attended by probably the most members ever!

Patrick started the meeting with a few jokes and then gave his annual report.

The group is going from strength to strength with more and more attendees at the exercise classes. Patrick asked for a minute’s silence whilst we remembered members who had passed away during the previous 12 months. Patrick then reviewed each of the events during the year and commented once again on the excellent attendances at the events.

Patrick then thanked the members of the committee and others for their hard work and enthusiasm throughout the year and gave out token gifts as appreciation.

Also mentioned were two stalwarts of the committee who were standing down after many years of service to the group. Gary Williams (vice chairman) and Denise Winters (Secretary) they will be sadly missed for their expertise and service to the group.

On the financial front the group has made a small profit on the year with some receipts being up and some down. The groups bank balance is strong.

Patrick mentioned that he would be doing the ‘Great North run’ again next year and unlike previous years, he would be requesting sponsorship.

The committee indicated that they would be willing to stand en-bloc again and they were duly elected for another year.

After another few jokes from Patrick we were set free to attack the cheese and wine, this year provided for by outside caterers. Excellent fare.

The raffle was then conducted by Jane McBryde and many happy winners were enthralled by their prizes.

Wednesday 15th - New Static bike for the Alex - see links page

Thursday 17th - Walking group annual Christmas dinner. 19:00 for 19:30 at Bromsgrove Golf club. Cost is £19.95 per person. See Pat at the Friday morning 09:00 class for tickets.

The dinner organised by Pat Comer, as it is each year (Thanks Pat) , raised £76 for the BHF. An enjoyable meal with lots of good company.

Wednesday 13th - Sherry and Mince pies, Christmas raffle
